OKU SAFARI (5 Days)

Day 1

Arrival and check-in formalities at one of our hotels.

After breakfast, visit the Tourism Office for registration. Visit the Palace and follow a guided tour. Have an encounter with His Royal Majesty the Fon of Oku and take palace water for blessings.

Afternoon visit to the local market and lunch at a local restaurant. Visit some traditional homes of native doctors, and soothsayers and some shrines.

 A pleasure trip to the famous Lake Oku (“Mawes”). Visit the National Plant Life Sanctuary that surrounds the lake. Enjoy the scenery, plants, birds, and the landscape around the lake.

Hear about the myth of creation with Lake Oku and its meaning and influence on the lives of Oku today. On our way back, a brief stop at the village of Jikejem and a visit to the Tolon waterfalls and the cave where the god of Tolon lives.

A safari hike to Mt. Kilum of 3,011 m, the second highest mountain in West Africa after Mt. Cameroon. We will be passing through the rain forest. Enjoy endemic bird species like the Bannerman’s Turaco, Banded Wattle Eye, Black-crowned Waxbill, native plants and the Indian Bamboo Forest.

The savanna at the summit is mostly covered with mbak kilum (Achemilla fischeri) and black jack (Bidens pilosa).

A day of culture. Visit some elders, notables, craft shops, museums, and a traditional dance. Afternoon departure and end of trip.

A Stay in OKU's Tourist Village ( 13 Days )

Day 1 - Day 4

Day 1: Arrive at the hotel and receive a briefing.

Day 2: Visit the Oku Fon’s Palace and the Palace Museum. Have a view of antiques and Oku’s history. Visit the residential area of His Royal Majesty’s 50 wives and 350 children. Visit the compounds of the first and second classes of Oku. Have a taste of Oku’s traditional dish of corn fufu (from maize flour), jamajama (vegetables), and katikati (chicken).

Day 3: After breakfast, drive to Lake Oku. On the way, visit the community of Jikejem and learn about their cultural attachment to the lake. View the landscape and visit the National Plant Life Sanctuary with its numerous endemic plant species (including medicinal plants), birds, and animals. Swim at the lake and camp overnight.

Day 4: Continue to enjoy Lake Oku and then return to Elak town. Relax, visit the local market, and enjoy some free time.

Day 5: A day for culture. Visit the market, some traditional homes, and village elders. Experience traditional gatherings, meals, dance, and a native doctor’s display and magic.

Day 6: Visit Oku’s caves and waterfalls while enjoying the scenery and beauty of nature. Take panoramic photos and have a picnic.

Day 7: Go on a breathtaking hike up Mt. Kilum. Hike through the rainforest. View a variety of plants, birds, and animals. Arrive at the summit and camp.

Day 8: At Mt. Kilum: View the mountain, old craters, savanna, fauna and flora.

Day 9: Mt. Kilum: Take final photos and descend.

Day 10: Relax and enjoy your own program or visit some homes, carving studios and snack halls.

Day 11: Visit sites such as museums, carving centers, craft shops, honey centers, the craft paper industry, OACU, Oku Community Radio Station. Find some souvenirs to take home.

Day 12: Visit some shrines, traditional healers, soothsayers, watch an Oku ritual to appease the gods.

Day 13: Visit the last home of interest, the Palace of Oku, to drink palace water and bid farewell to Oku.

Day 1 - Day 5

Day 1: Yaoundé or Douala International Airport welcome and check-in.

Day 2: Yaoundé – Ngaoundere on a night train.

Day 3: Ngaoundere – Lamido’s Palace.

Day 4: Ngaoundere – Benoue National Park

Day 5: Benoue National Park – Garoua – Maroua

Day 6: Maroua – Waza National Park, one of the richest parks in West Africa.

Day 7: Safari in Waza National Park

Day 8: Waza National Park – Mousgoun people – Maga – Maroua

Day 9: Day of culture and people. Mora – Oujilla Village – Mokolo via Col de Koza

Day 10: Mokolo – Kapsiki Village of Rhumsiki

Day 11: Relaxation and Rhumsiki traditional dance.

Day 12: Rhumsiki – Garoua, by car.

Day 13: Yaoundé – free day for shopping.

Day 14: Yaoundé – Bamenda, relaxation.

Day 15:

Day 16: Open

Day 17: Bamenda – Oku – Lake Oku

Day 18: Oku Palace, a traditional dance, people, food, museums, shrines, craft shops, Honey Center, etc.

Day 19: Mt. Oku hiking. Evening departure for Bamenda.

Day 20: Bamenda – Limbe via Dschang.

Day 21: Limbe – Mt. Cameroon.

Day 22: Buea – Limbe

Day 23: Limbe – Douala – return flight. End of Tour.
